Naturalizations

Basic Conditions for Naturalization Applications

The same requirements apply to lawful permanent residents seeking citizenship in the United States. These requirements cover both fundamental eligibility requirements and conditions that must be satisfied during the application process. The following requirements must be met in most situations before you can submit an  Application for Naturalization before Immigration Services:

  • Being a lawful permanent resident for at least five years (or three years if you are applying as the spouse of a citizen of the United States)
  • Being at least 18 years old.
  • Meet the pre-requisite for “continuous residency” (which is distinct from the prerequisite for “lawful permanent residence”); and,
-Have spent at least three months residing in the state where you are requesting citizenship.
  • While these are the prerequisites in general, you might still be qualified to apply for naturalization even if you don’t match these conditions. Different requirements apply, for instance, if you are a student, have or had a  U.S. military service  spouse or child , or are applying for citizenship for your minor child.

To start the naturalization process, you must meet the necessary eligibility conditions. Additionally, you must be able to show during the process that:

  • You are a person of good moral character.
  • You will uphold  the American ideals.
  • You have  English reading, writing, and speaking skills.
  • You are familiar with the fundamentals of American history and governance.

You will also be required to take an Oath of loyalty to the United States at the conclusion of the procedure.

There are also some exceptions to these rules, which are significant. For instance, you might not need to fulfill the basic English and civics knowledge criteria if you are over 50 or 55,  or have been given a qualifying medical certification for disability exceptions.
